60 anniversary HMSM

Graduation Ceremony September 2018 | 24 September 2018

On Friday 14 September, 125 students received their Funda (= bachelor diploma) during a festive ceremony in the MECC in Maastricht.

Lecturer André van Lieshout, as Master of Ceremonies, introduced the programme with verve and British-style humour. In his speech, he talked about the graduates’ answers to the question: how did they look back on their time at the Hotel Management School and what were their plans for the future? It turns out that 28% intend to continue with their studies, 46% have a job, just under 11% are still looking for work and the rest are setting out to explore the world as backpackers.

On behalf of the teaching and support staff, dean Ad Smits wished the graduates successful careers and happiness in their personal lives. Rita Kusters, Primary Phase team leader and also lecturer, won the hearts of the graduates and their parents with an impassioned keynote speech, in which she complimented Evy Graus who graduated cum laude. She also urged the young professionals to maintain the balance in their future lives, as they has during their time as students.

Without exception, the graduates experienced their time at the Hotel Management School as a fantastic period, during which they developed as individuals and made friendships for life. Graduate Irene Rietman formulated this as follows: As well as all the wonderful memories and new friends I have acquired at the school and in Maastricht, all the tips and experiences passed on by the teaching staff during lectures and field trips will remain in my memory. This includes focusing on your own success and not being distracted by others. Besides this, all the experience I have acquired during the internships has played an important part in making me what I am now.

IHAB Award

Alumnus Jean Pierre van der Rest, Professor of Business Studies at Leiden University and also a member of the International Hospitality Advisory Board (advisory body to the Hotel Management School Maastricht), presented the IHAB Award. This is an award for the graduate who made the greatest impression on the teaching staff and external examiners during his/her final assessment. Evy Graus was winner of the award this time. In addition to eternal glory, Evy received a prize of € 1,000 sponsored by Bidfood, a day spent accompanying an IHAB member and an overnight stay.

Naturally, speeches of congratulation were also given by the chair of the student association Amphitryon, Lotte Eickholt, and by the chair and deputy chair of the Student Council, Laura Raijmann and Wendy Béquet.

The last speaker was graduate Aida Antuña Blaauw, who spoke on behalf of all the new graduates. She looked back with a great deal of humour on the past years of study. What she remembered in particular was that when it was necessary, all the students came together as a team.

After the ceremony, graduates and their parents and staff members of the Hotel Management School Maastricht mingled during a festive reception, and reminisced about the years past with a drink and snack in hand.
