Let's catch up with Anne-FLeur van der Heiden | 15 June 2018

From selling cars to writing a novel, read about the interesting career moves of alumna [F 2009] Anne-Fleur van der Heiden.

How did you end up in your current job?

The path of my career can be described as the Dutch weather. After I graduated in 2009 I immediately got a job at Sandenburg concept creation where I also did my traineeship as a project assistant. After nine months I travelled through South East Asia and when I got back, I decided to join my boyfriend during his traineeship in Barcelona where I worked in a bar-restaurant called FOC. Back in Holland I got a job working as a hostess at the Auto-Rai and that was the start of a new job as a sales representative for a Mercedes-Benz dealer in Veghel.

All these years, there was this voice in my head telling me that I wanted to become a journalist or a writer. I decided to follow that voice and signed up for the selection of the writer’s school (Schrijversvakschool) in Amsterdam. In January this year I published my first novel ‘Klaproos’.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

It’s hard to predict the future. I’d never thought that I would sell cars for example, or that besides writing a novel, I was going to write poems as well.

The writing-business is insecure, but it’s also broad. I have a few strong ideas about a second and a third novel, but I can imagine I also use story telling for other things than books.  Besides all that, I would like to travel more than I’m doing now.

Do you have any tips for the current hotello’s?

It’s cheesy to say, but enjoy your time at the hotel management school to the fullest. Despite my career going into another direction, I’ve never regretted one minute of my time in Maastricht.

The network, the hospitality attitude, the mentality to create and organize, is useful everywhere. And after you graduate you’ll soon realize that these are the best years of your life. The people you’ll get to know and the fundamentals you learn will be the foundation of the rest of your career.
