HMSM at EuroChrie Dublin 2018 | 21 november 2018

A hundred thousand welcomes!

‘A hundred thousand welcomes’ is the translation of the Gaelic expression ‘Céad míle fáilte’. The delegation of HMSM that attended the annual Eurochrie conference certainly felt the hospitality extended by Dublin Institute of Technology, chaired by Dr. Ralf Burbach, Dean of the Hospitality Management School. We were immersed in a three-day programme packed with keynotes, paper presentations, posters and workshops about research in hospitality and hospitality education. The cultural programme of the conference inevitably implied Irish dancing and the occasional glass of Guinness. The conference dinner was held at the magnificently restored Guinness Warehouse, towering over the city.

Interesting research and education ideas

We took home a bucket full of interesting research and education ideas such as the use of art in career counselling, workshops on human trafficking, serious gaming with Lego, active and experiential learning and mini experimental designs that could easily be implemented in our curriculum to boost students’ investigative abilities. Research inspiration was found in two flavours: research-informed education (see above) and hospitality research. There were many studies on organizational behavior (many work engagement studies), a new Customer Delight Scale, a content analysis of expressions of outrage and delight about theme park experiences and some elegant examples of big data research based on open sources and relevant to the industry (e.g. the relation between hospitality employment and crime reduction). And of course our own paper on the impact of tattoo genre/gender on perceived organisation fit in hotels with Michael Tews was well received!

Call to action for HMSM staff

For those interested to read more, please contact the delegation members: Marja Windhorst, Armand Odekerken, Frans van Heteren or Ankie Hoefnagels. The conference papers are available on the I-drive under ‘onderzoek_research’, ‘conferences’. Would you like to be part of the next Eurochrie delegation?

For the next APAC Eurochrie 2019 conference two papers have already been selected, but if you are interested to present a paper or a poster, or have a great research proposal, please contact ankie.hoefnagels@zuyd.nl.
