Let's catch up with alumnus Boudewijn Smals [F 2009] | 02 november 2018

What do you do in daily life?

I am Business Manager @ RTL MCN. In my role I am both responsible for the team that manages the partnerships with our influencer network like Anna Nooshin, StukTV and Kalvijn (you probably didn't know that 49% of all content watched on YouTube in The Netherlands is part of RTL) and I am responsible for the business side of our owned media channels (like Concentrate).

What is great/fun/special/fantastic about your job?

The people, the responsibility and impact that comes with it, but also the industry. The creative mindset in de media has always appealed to me as well as the high involvement from the audience. And of course, working with influencers and shaping a new industry together! And what isn’t? Hangover influencers ;)

What have you learned at the hotel school and what can you put to use right now?

A lot of things, but amongst these are undoubtedly: Mister Overmeer who taught us in his first lesson which guests to favor. And although the revpar is a little less important in media, without BA/BE I would have had no clue what to do with a revenue statement. But most importantly, the combination of Hotel Management School Maastricht and an active role within Amphitryon prepared me for the responsibilities, shaped my social skills and created my network.

What was your first job?

Once I finished my master I got hired as Proposition Marketer within the KPN traineeship.

How did you end up in this position?

Apply........but more interesting my real first job after the hotel school was market analyst China at Desso, I ended up there thanks to my active role within Amphitryon.

Where did you do your internships?

South Africa and Rotterdam.

What puts a smile on your face when you look back at your time at the hotel school?

A thousand memories. But more in general, the fun, the people, the events and of course the (lack of) responsibilities.

With whom are you still in contact?

Many alumni. Some more often than others of course, but 90% of my private network consists of hotello’s and also in business we tend to seek each other.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Still in the media if you ask me now. The role is to be discussed ;)

Do you have any tips for the current hotello’s?

Trust your gut and take the unpaved path. You can always return to the route that so many have followed before. But more importantly I guess: don't let any trip, party of event slip while you are there. Go the whole nine yards! Besides the morning after, you will never regret it.

Anything else you would like to share?

Nope, just that I am looking forward to meeting you at the next Primus baravond!
