Only two kisses in Paris | 16 oktober 2017

Read Lisanne Nijks' story about her internship in Hotel Napoléon in Paris.

I chose to do my internship in Paris for several reasons. First of all, I wanted to see if the French (work) culture differs from the Dutch (work) culture. Second of all, I decided to stay within Europe since I had the feeling that I would learn more and get more responsibilities within a hotel inside of Europe than outside of Europe. Last of all, I wanted to improve my French. One thing that I can tell you for sure is that after a few month you will sound like a Française!

I did my internship at a typical French hotel named Hotel Napoléon. Hotel Napoléon is located by the Champs-Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe. I worked in the Housekeeping department for five months as a housekeeping manager. The hotel taught me in the beginning everything about the housekeeping department and after proving that I was able to do the job, they gave me several responsibilities. Moreover, I was always having lunch with my other colleagues and we did several activities outside our working hours.

Paris is a city were I felt at home immediately. The city has different areas and each one is diverse and special. There is a lot to discover and I never felt bored during the five month I lived there. There are a few cultural differences I noticed compared to the Netherlands. It started when I walked into the hotel for the first time and all my new colleagues gave me two kisses on the cheeks instead of the Dutch three kisses. You get used to this really quickly and now I’m back in the Netherlands changing back to three kisses seems strange. Moreover, France is known for the hierarchy within the hotel industry. However, I didn’t really notice this as the team of Hotel Napoléon felt like one big family.
