Join the Move the Date Challenge!

March 27th - May 31st

During the Move the Date Challenge you will, together with students and staff from hotel schools all over the Netherlands, work on different sustainable challenges to reduce your carbon footprint! This is also a way to create more awareness for Earth Overshoot Day. The ‘Move the Date’ challenge helps you to change habits, make sustainable choices and inspires you with alternative lifestyle options! Are you up for the challenge?

What is Earth Overshoot Day?

The earth overshoot day is the date when we have used all the biological resources such as healthy soil, clean water etc., that Earth regenerates during the entire year. In other words, our planet has a yearly ‘budget’ of ecological resources that it regenerates naturally, and ideally we wouldn’t use up that budget until at the earliest December 31st. However, as we as a global society continue to produce and consume in an unsustainable way our overshoot day appears much earlier in the year. Each year marks another overshoot day, with 2023’s overshoot falling on July 28th.

What is the Challenge?

Before the offical start, you do a baseline  measurement of your carbon footprint. This shows you how many Earths are needed for your current lifestyle and what your personal overshoot date is. All the members of your team share this score in an overview. During the challenge you receive an assignment every week. For example: try to eat vegan for a week, cook with seasonal vegetables, don't use single use plastic for a week, etc. At the end of the 9 weeks you will measure again, and the team with the biggest difference wins the challenge!

In addition to the competition you'll end up with a lot of knowledge and awareness about sustainability!

How much time does it take?

The challenge starts at the 27th of March until the 31st of May. Every other week there is a guest lecture, and an inspiration/sharing session, which last both an hour. In addition you and your group will meet during the challenge to discuss progress, share your experiences and tips. On average the challenge will require 1,5 hours of your time per week - in addition to your weekly challenge which you apply in your life! At the end of the challenge there will be a festive dinner ceremony on May 31.
