Future Game Changers | Alexander Goossens

As part of our Future Game Changers blog series, meet Alexander Goossens, third-year HMSM student and president of HMSM’s new study association: IRIS. In this story he shares his “Wings” – his ambitions, dreams and vision for the future of hospitality.

Alexander Goossens

My name is Alexander Goossens, 22 years old, currently in my third year at HMSM, and just returned from an amazing internship in Vienna. I’m not far from my roots: born in Maastricht and raised 20 minutes down the road in Geleen, together with my younger brother, by two wonderful parents. They encouraged me to join the HMSM, and it has been the best decision of my life. This year, I have the privilege of serving as the president of HMSM’s new study association: IRIS.

The IRIS Study Association

As IRIS is still in the process of being set up, my role as president is still evolving. My main focus lies on shaping the future of this new study association. Together with an incredible team, Blanche, Nina, Leo, Matthijs, and Noah, we are building the foundation for what will become a community for all HMSM students. I bring with me the knowledge and experiences of the past two years, from the Excellence Programme to my internship abroad, and I will use those to ensure that IRIS grows into something meaningful for all students.

“Dare to spread your Wings and take off. Don’t worry too much about the altitude or the speed; what matters most is the direction you’re heading in.”

Alexander's Wings

When I look back at my time here, I think of the people who have taken me under their “Wings.” Teachers who go the extra mile for their students. The coordinators of the Excellence Programme, who gave me my first taste of what it means to act like a true professional. And, of course, the founders of IRIS, who entrusted my colleagues and me with launching this initiative while offering guidance and support along the way.
All these inspiring people gave me the momentum I needed to test and exceed my own limitations. They showed me what it means to be part of a community where you grow together, learn together, and inspire each other.

My next challenge is to establish IRIS as a fundamental part of our school, so that it becomes a study asociation future students can rely on and benefit from. Alongside this I’ll continue my studies, learning from the best with my fellow students and friends.
Looking ahead, I’m not overly concerned with mapping out the next five or ten years in detail. I believe that opportunities always present themselves, you just need the patience and courage to take them when they do. What I do know is that ever since delving deeper into our industry, I’ve come to greatly admire Aman Resorts. Working for them somewhere in the near future is an ambition of mine, and I envision that as my next goal after graduation.

Advice for Students

Use your time here to invest in yourself. Take full advantage of the fact that our teachers are experienced professionals with a genuine passion for hospitality. Make use of the school’s extensive network, and dare to join the many extra activities, challenges, and opportunities available. These experiences will not only help you grow into a professional but also shape you as a person.
At the same time, try to control the distractions that surround you, and focus on what truly helps you move forward. Seek out opportunities, don’t wait for them to come to you, they are everywhere to be found.

Above all: dare to spread your Wings and take off. Don’t worry too much about the altitude or the speed; what matters most is the direction you’re heading in. And never forget to enjoy the flight, because these years will be some of the most memorable chapters of your life.
