Alumnus Rik Hüsken funds First Generation Scholarship through a special fundraising

Sometimes impact begins with a very personal gesture. On his 60th birthday, alumnus Rik Hüsken [F 1989] asked guests at his celebration to make a donation to Foundation HMSM instead of bringing gifts.
Thanks to this wonderful choice and the generosity of his guests, an impressive result was achieved: together they made it possible to fund one full First Generation Scholarship. A gift of lasting value that quite literally opens the door for a future Hotelschool student.

First Generation Scholarship

The First Generation Scholarship is intended for students who are the first in their family to start a higher education and who need additional (financial) support. The scholarship covers the additional tuition fee in the first year and the purchase of a knife set and Tenue de Ville, helping students get a strong start at HMSM.

How did you get the idea for linking your birthday to a fundraising campaign?

During the partner event on October 2, organized to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the hotel school, I was introduced to the foundation and the new scholarships that were presented. I immediately thought, “this is something I want to support.” It didn’t take long to connect my birthday celebration to this great cause, especially since many hotel school friends would be attending.

How did your guests react when you asked for donations instead of gifts?

They were very positive, I received wonderful and heartfelt responses. The idea of giving someone the opportunity to study, and knowing exactly how the donation would be used, really resonated with them.

Why did the First Generation Scholarship feel like the right cause for you?

I believe in enabling growth, development, and education for those for whom it isn’t a given. Especially for those who are not familiar with pursuing further education after high school or vocational training (MBO) and are limited by their financial situation. By supporting this scholarship, it can help remove a significant barrier for an ambitious future student.

“As a hospitality professional, you owe so much to that special time and invaluable education. How great is it to give back and support the current generation of students who need a helping hand?”

What advice would you give to a first-gen student receiving your scholarship?

Enjoy your academic journey, have confidence in yourself, and push through when things get challenging. Surround yourself with fellow students, you’re there to support each other, share a valuable and memorable experience, and build relationships that last a lifetime!

Would you recommend others contribute to the foundation in a similar way? Why?

Absolutely, go for it! As a hospitality professional, you owe so much to that special time and invaluable education. How great is it to give back and support the current generation of students who need a helping hand?

What would you say to someone who is hesitating to donate?

If you’re hesitating, my advice is simple: just do it. A donation to the relatively small Foundation HMSM makes a big impact. Your contribution opens doors for young people and gives them the chance to follow the same path you did. Isn’t that fantastic?

If you had to summarize this initiative in one sentence, what would you say?

Heartwarming!

Inspired by Rik’s story? You too can make an impact. By making a donation or starting your own fundraising initiative for your birthday, anniversary, or with your year group, you contribute to opportunities for students for whom studying is not a given.
