My experience with the Master FREM

Samed is  currently a full-time student in the Master in Facility and Real Estate Management, while also working in procurement, a combination that fits together surprisingly well. Read his experience in the Master FREM.

Real-life cases and a practical approach

After completing my Bachelor in Business Administration and International Business, I was looking for something more applied and strategic. I wanted to move beyond theory and explore how business thinking connects to real-world challenges. This programme stood out to me because of its strong link to facility and real estate management, particularly in the context of sustainability and value creation.

What I have enjoyed most about this Master is how practical it feels. Many of our exams and assignments are based on real-life cases, which means you are constantly working on situations that resemble what professionals face in the field. Rather than studying from a distance, it often feels like you are already part of the industry.

A diverse study programme

The guest lectures have been another highlight. Hearing directly from professionals dealing with current challenges makes the content much more concrete. It also provides insights that go beyond textbooks, things you can genuinely apply in your own work.

One module that really stood out to me was Multiple Value Creation. It shifted my perspective on procurement. Instead of viewing it as simply purchasing goods or services, I started to see it as a strategic function that can drive value and contribute to sustainability within organisations.

For my thesis, I am developing a decision framework for procurement and FREM teams to compare diesel and electric trucks used for internal campus transport. This project allows me to bring together everything I have learned so far: cost analysis, operational performance, environmental impact, and supplier relationships.

“The master is hands-on, relevant, and challenges you to look at problems from different perspectives”

My future after the master FREM

Looking ahead, I would like to continue my career here in Limburg, ideally in a role where procurement, sustainability, and facility management come together.

If you are considering this Master, I would definitely recommend it. It is hands-on, relevant, and challenges you to look at problems from different perspectives. Exactly what you need to prepare for a dynamic and evolving field.
