Ciao! I'm Diego, and today I want to share with you the enriching experiences I've had while living in the city of Maastricht. As a student coming from a small town in northern Italy, Maastricht instantly captivated me with its international community, lively atmosphere, and proximity to various cities and countries. Join me as I delve into the artistic wonders, adventurous day trips, and cultural events that make Maastricht an exceptional place to call home.
One of the many perks of living in Maastricht is its strategic location, surrounded by diverse cities and countries. Exploring Germany and Belgium became a thrilling adventure for me, and believe me when I say that even embarking on a bike trip to places like Liege or Aachen is well worth the effort. Bike your way through picturesque landscapes adorned with vibrant greenery, rolling hills, and scenic landscapes. With less than a two-hour journey, you can escape to a different reality for a day, creating memories that you will cherish forever.
One of the things that surprised me the most about Maastricht is its thriving artistic scene. The city is a haven for art enthusiasts, boasting numerous galleries, art institutions, and prestigious academies. I had no idea that Maastricht held such a stellar reputation in the arts, but I soon discovered the reality of it. One prominent event that takes place annually is the TEFAF, the largest art fair in Europe. This grand exhibition showcases breathtaking works by renowned artists throughout history, from Van Gogh to Basquiat, alongside Victorian jewellery and medieval furniture. While purchasing a piece may not be feasible for everyone, strolling through the expansive event centre is like wandering through a multidisciplinary art museum. Engaging with various sellers and discussing the pieces adds an extra layer of excitement to the experience.
Another prominent institution in Maastricht is the Jan Van Eyck Academy, which offers artist residencies to creative minds from all corners of the globe. Each year, the academy opens its doors to the public, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a weekend filled with art, workshops, and captivating events. This unique opportunity allows you to nourish your soul with beauty and ideas, interacting with talented artists and exploring their inspiring works.
Maastricht has become an unforgettable chapter in my life. From embarking on exciting day trips to neighboring cities and countries to immersing myself in the city's vibrant art community, every day in Maastricht is filled with new discoveries and enriching experiences.
