Maastricht, the city with the world to offer!

"The international students of Maastricht are the beating heart of this place, making you travel places just with their stories. Because I am half German and half Italian, I felt right at home in this multicultural city from the beginning"

Hi there! My name is Chiara, a fourth-year student at Hotel Management School Maastricht and although my name is Italian, I’m half German as well, giving me the possibility to communicate and make friends in multiple languages!

As someone who loves to interact with people and make them happy, Hotel Management School Maastricht was the perfect choice for me. And with time I also found out new things about myself! I realised how fascinating data is to me, and that’s why Revenue Management quickly became my favourite course at HMSM. But beyond the study programme, what I love most about Maastricht is, the city itself. I’d like to take a moment to share with you some of my favourite things about this beautiful city and my experience living here!

Exploring the city

For starters, whenever I need a break from studying, I like to roam around the city and explore its many hidden gems. Maastricht has a lot of quaint cafes and bars where you can try new things. I like to go to Café Zondag, which has a relaxed atmosphere and serves great coffee and brunch, and luckily enough it is located in the charming neighbourhood of Wyck, my personal favourite. Wyck has, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful buildings and streets in Maastricht, full of history and character, and during Christmas, the neighbourhood is adorned with lights and decorations, making it even more magical and picturesque.

If you enjoy cider like I do, you’ll love the Irish pub in the city centre, Peter’s. Located on the main Market square, it has an amazing tap cider that’s my new favourite. It’s a great place to watch a game with friends, even if you’re not into sports. There’s always a friendly crowd, and the staff is so warming.

The international environment

Living in Maastricht also means being close to nature. I live close to Sint Pieter, one of the highest spots in the Netherlands! It’s nice to take a walk or go for a bike ride and enjoy the greenery and the hills of the region, quite a rarity in the country. There are also a lot of wandering trails that one can follow, and a lot of nice picnic spots to find!

But the fun doesn’t end here! The city is located in the southern part of the Netherlands, close to the Belgian and German borders, which makes it a melting pot of cultures, and a great place to explore around! Take your bike, and in 15 minutes you’ll find yourself relaxing in a cute Belgian town with hills and fields. Bike two hours, and it’s time for a German Pretzel treat! (or just take the train, like everyone I know, and treat yourself anyways!)

And if you don’t want to move around too much, the many international students of Maastricht are the beating heart of this place, making you travel places just with their stories. Because I am half German and half Italian, I felt right at home in this multicultural city from the beginning.

The community at Hotel Management School Maastricht

Finally, what makes my experience at Hotel Management School Maastricht even more special are the people. My classmates have become like family to me, and we support each other through thick and thin. It’s great to be part of a community of like-minded individuals who share the same passion for hospitality.

I’d highly recommend Maastricht to anyone who’s looking for a vibrant and welcoming city to live in. With its unique blend of cultures, charming neighbourhoods and natural beauty, there’s something for everyone here!
