Maastricht - Old buildings and so much more!

"As a student in the city, I feel like Maastricht has everything that it’s needed to truly enjoy your student life!"

Hello, I'm Tomke, and today I want to take you on a journey through some of my favorite spots in the charming city of Maastricht. When I first arrived in this small Dutch city, I was pleasantly surprised by its diverse neighborhoods, each offering a unique experience. Maastricht boasts a rich historical heritage, but it also embraces modernity with impressive architectural transformations.

Lumiere Cinema

One of those spots, nestled in Maastricht, is Lumiere, a cinema with a twist. What sets it apart is its focus on art-house and independent films, creating a haven for cinephiles. Housed within the grand and industrial building of the former porcelain factory, Lumiere offers a captivating ambiance. While enjoying a cold beer on the terrace, which overlooks the Bassin, a charming water body connected to the river, you can bask in the southern sun and watch boats gently gliding past. It's an ideal spot to relax, especially on sunny summer days, giving you a sense of being on a vacation.

Centre Ceramique

When it's time to hit the books and find a quiet place to study, my sanctuary is Centre Ceramique. Situated in the vibrant Wyck neighborhood, this spacious building houses the city library and regularly hosts changing (art) exhibitions. With its multi-level design and generous windows, Centre Ceramique offers a magnificent panoramic view of the cityscape, inspiring productivity and focus. Additionally, you'll find a cozy café within the building, perfect for those long study sessions where coffee becomes your loyal companion.

Marres' inner garden

Sometimes we all need a peaceful escape from the bustling city center. Behind Marres, an unassuming building that was once a farmhouse, lies a tiny park that remains undiscovered by many locals. Marres serves as a cultural space hosting exhibitions, workshops, and a restaurant. However, the true gem is the inner garden, a hidden oasis accessible to the public. As you find solace on one of the benches in the lush greenery, the sounds of the city fades away, replaced by a tranquil ambiance. Take a moment to unwind, immerse yourself in your book, and let the gentle shade of the meticulously landscaped vegetation envelop you.

As a student in the city, I feel like Maastricht has everything that it’s needed to truly enjoy your student life, from secret spots to indie cinemas, and study spots that offer a break from your ordinary school life, Maastricht provides an abundance of opportunities to expand your horizons and make the most of your time as a student!
