Is an English bachelor right for you? Ask yourself these questions

Studying in English might feel like a big step, especially if Dutch is your first language. But choosing the English Bachelor track of Hotel Management School Maastricht can open doors you may not even know exist yet. If you’re considering the English track, these questions can help you decide whether it’s the right fit for you.

1. Am I curious about the world beyond The Netherlands?

Do you enjoy learning about other cultures, viewpoints, and ways of working? The English track places you in an international classroom where you collaborate daily with students from all over the world. This multicultural environment exposes you to different perspectives, work styles, and ways of thinking, helping you build crosscultural communication skills that are crucial in global hospitality careers.

If you get energy from diversity, global perspectives, and intercultural exchange, the English track might suit you perfectly.

Think about:

  • Do I like meeting people from different backgrounds?
  • Am I open to new ideas and ways of thinking?

2. Do I want to feel confident using English in professional settings?

English is the main language of business in hospitality and many other industries. Studying in English helps you build professional vocabulary, presentation skills, and confidence. Even if you don’t feel “perfect” in English now, you don’t need to be. What matters more is your willingness to practice and improve.

In the English track at the Hotel Management School Maastricht, all your classes will be in English. This means everything, from lectures to assignments, will be in the international language of business. This helps you improve your English and makes sure you’ll get familiar with the words and ways of communication used in the (global) world of hospitality.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to communicate easily with international colleagues and clients in the future
  • Am I willing to challenge myself to become more fluent?

“I would highly recommend the English-language track. You broaden your network, your vocabulary, and so many other skills in general.”

3. Am I thinking about an international career, exchange or study?

If you see yourself working abroad, doing an exchange, or joining a multinational company, an English-taught Bachelor gives you a strong head start. If you ever want to pursue a Master’s degree abroad, having an English taught bachelor makes the transition smoother. You’ll already be used to studying, collaborating, and problem-solving in English; exactly what many global employers expect.

Reflect on:

  • Would I like to work or study outside the Netherlands at some point?
  • Do I want my CV to show international experience?

4. What kind of student do I want to become?

Choosing the English track isn’t about being “better” than others, it’s about choosing the environment that matches your goals. Studying in a language that is not your mother tongue can be difficult at the beginning, so consider that you will probably need some time to adjust yourself to this international classroom setting. However, many of our English-track students are of opinion that it is 100% worth the challenge. “I would highly recommend the English-language track. You broaden your network, your vocabulary, and so many other skills in general.”

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to push myself academically, personally, and professionally?
  • Do I want an international student experience, even while studying in the Netherlands?

If the answer is 'yes', the English track could be the right choice.

Still unsure? Talk to current English-track students, attend the webinar, visit our open days, and ask questions. Sometimes, the best way to know is to imagine yourself there, and see how it feels.
