Just graduated: Christianne Poels [F 2024]

Christianne has the opportunity to combine two favourite things in her work: Marriott and Human Resources. Christianne Poels [F 2024] was inspired by her parents, Josette Poels-Liberg [F 1994] and Maarten Poels [F 1994], but chooses her own career path.

What are your plans after graduation?

After my management internship at The Barcelona EDITION, I fell in love with not only Marriott, but also the dynamic and rewarding field of Human Resources. While my initial search was focused on opportunities in sunny Barcelona, I'm incredibly excited to have begun my career at the Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel as a Human Resources Assistant. Through contacting my network and by making use of the resources of the Marriott Brand, I came across the vacancy. Here, I have the chance to continue my journey with Marriott, discover a new brand and build a strong foundation for my future in HR.

What are important qualities your future employer/manager should have?

Above all, I believe in the importance of leading by example. When someone leads by example, they don’t just encourage team members to strive for excellence; they actively demonstrate it. This is the difference between saying “You can do this” and “We can do this”. I highly value this in leaders and one day, I hope to embody this myself too. Key qualities I value in a leader include transparent communication, a focus on relationship-building and the ability to empower and inspire their team to reach their full potential. I appreciate leaders who create an environment where everyone feels supported, trusted and motivated to grow.

Where do you see yourself in three years’ time?

There’s no denying that these kinds of questions are always the most challenging. However, in three years, I see myself growing further within the field of HR, particularly in learning and development. I am passionate about hospitality, empowering individuals and nurturing their growth, as I genuinely care about their well-being and success. I find fulfillment in supporting employee development and creating an environment where everyone can thrive personally and professionally. I also hope to have completed the Elevate leadership program by Marriott, which would equip me with the skills and confidence to take on more tasks and responsibilities as a leader.
Most importantly, in three years, I aim to apply my strengths and utilize my qualities while doing so with passion and a smile on my face!

What alumni made an impression on you? And why?

First, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the newest alumni, my peers, who graduated with me this past September. During the ceremony, each of us was introduced with a personal story highlighting our next step in hospitality and hearing these journeys was truly inspiring. It was a celebration of passion, ambition, and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

However, the two individuals who left the biggest impression on me are, without a doubt, my parents, Josette Poels-Liberg [F 1994] and Maarten Poels [F 1994]. They have been my greatest inspiration, passing down their passion for hospitality to both my sister and me. From them, I learned the value of hard work, the importance of dreaming big and the beauty of doing it all with passion and a smile. I admire them not only as my parents but also as fellow 'hotello’s.' Their journeys in the industry, their dedication and the inspiring network they’ve built over the years have always been a guiding light for me. They’ve shown me that hospitality is more than just a career, it’s a way of life, one that brings joy, connection, and endless opportunities.
