Connecting academia, industry, and society to shape the future of XR in the Euregion.
On May 6, 2025, Maastricht University and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences officially launched the Limburg Immersive Technologies (LIT) Network together at the Teaching Hotel in Maastricht. Researchers, innovators, industry leaders, students and policy makers were invited to celebrate.

The LIT Network is a strategic partnership between Maastricht University and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences. It was created to increase and advance research, education, and innovation in Extended Reality (XR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR). The network builds on existing activities in the Euregion and integrates these into the platform to stimulate growth in the region.
There is a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, and the aim of the LIT Network is to transform how we work, learn, and solve challenges in society by using immersive technology. By using these technologies—enhanced by AI— to develop people and their skills, LIT helps prepare future-proof jobs across both the public and private sectors.
The launch event featured keynote speeches, practice use cases, and co-creation sessions. The evening focused on the mission of LIT to encourage collaboration between academia and industry, and also highlighted the urgency for it in education, healthcare, industry and our society. The interactive sessions, hosted by the Zuyd’s Food Experience Lab and UM’s DEXLab allowed guests to immerse and try out XR Technologies.
The LIT network enables cross-disciplinary research and impact-driven applications of immersive technologies for academia. For the industry, it provides a testing ground for immersive tech innovation for both large and small companies, with access to top talent and a gateway to collaborative research and development. In education, the network connects theory and practice via internships and provides real-life projects and hands-on learning opportunities. Lastly, it supports regional development for policymakers, by mapping ecosystems and guiding evidence-based innovation policies.
LIT is a key driver of Limburg’s digital transformation through XR. It aligns with broader EU goals for inclusive, sustainable technological development, and it strengthens the region’s capacity to innovate. It also emphasises its position as frontrunner in human-centric immersive technologies.
After the successful launch, LIT is currently expanding its network, launching projects, initiating shared funding, and welcoming new collaborators from education, business, and government. If you are an organization interested in joining, or if you wish to learn more, reach out and get involved! Let us shape the future of immersive technology.
The International XR-Metaverse Conference 2025 takes place 25-27 june, with the theme: "Bridging between realities: transformative, inclusive, and sustainable XR’. LIT is proud to support this key platform uniting industry and academia.
