On 24 June, research centre Global Minds @ Work, together with Vista College and Maastricht University, organised a workshop 'Mapping mobility trajectories.' The workshop took place at the Vista College in Maastricht.
Guest speakers Professor Valentina Mazzucato (UM) and Gladys Akom Ankobrey (PhD student) presented their research on the mobility trajectories of young migrants from Ghana and taught participants to map their own mobility journey. That these are much more complex and rich than a movement from country A to country B became very clear.
The complexity of second-generation migrants and their relationship with their parents' country was also highlighted. That life journey showed young migrants how rich their cultural capital actually is, while often seen as problematic. But the mobility trajectories of people without a migration background are often just as fascinating. You moved from Stein to Grevenbicht and there they spoke a different dialect! Your parents divorced and you were suddenly travelling back and forth between Maastricht and Brussels on a weekly basis.
It was an engaging an informative workshop that teachers can now bring to their various classes. Finally, participants were given the book 'Finding your voice; an intercultural storytelling workshop with young people.' That book contained another nice surprise: the drawn illustrations show images of the THCB where the workshop was held.
