The Global Mind Conference traditionally kicks off the new semester at HMSM. It is the homecoming event of our operational interns, who returned from their international adventure in the hotel industry.

This edition, Jan Paul Rutten, CEO of Gulpener Brewery, was the first keynote speaker. The 12th generation of a legendary brewing dynasty, in proud possession of a BCorp certificate and the most sustainable brewery in Europe. Sustainable on planet ánd people. Jan Paul talked about the sustainability mission of Gulpener, the changing consumer behavior on beer consumption and the challenges of being an independent brewery in a competitive market.
We also asked Jan Paul about his motivation to give up his medical practice to lead the family business. What did he learn from working as a surgeon in Nepal? His answer: compared to most of the world, our problems are really small. Be aware of your privilege.
Next, Martin Hendricks, CEO of Black Label hotels, presented his ever growing hotel empire with the usual flair and humour. Martin also sponsors and handed out the Global Mind Award to the student who created the best Global Mind assignment during the internship.
This edition, the award went to Nico Eidner (Dublin) who was commended for his honesty, sense of humor and adaptability. Nico finished his internship in Dublin, Ireland. He beautifully captured everyday Irish life: the small differences, meaningful moments, and the unexpected feeling of coming home in a new country. Runners up were Pleun van den Heuvel, Zerlino van der Velde, Lieve de Kruijk and Evelien Carucci. Congratulations!

Afterwards, Darq Maastricht, by alumnus Jorrit Consten [F 2015], served Student Treats for the returning students, because they have missed the treats from HMSM’s 75th anniversary celebration.
We wish all students a smooth landing back in Maastricht!

Students defended their graduation project, conducted on behalf of Global Minds @ Work. The project took place at Xplore, an Agora school in Amsterdam.

The study explores how internship supervisors assess reflective blogs written by students during their intercultural internships abroad.
