The Extra Mile Fund

We believe that personal growth, leadership, and the development of soft skills take place not only in the classroom, but also in activities outside it. Employers look beyond diplomas and academic results. Students who take initiative, continue to develop themselves, and gain additional experiences are the ones who stand out. That is why The Extra Mile Fund supports extracurricular activities organised by and for students.

These activities give students the opportunity to gain new experiences, expand their networks, inspire one another, and develop skills that are highly valuable both within hospitality and beyond. Groups of students can apply for funding to organise activities that promote personal development, leadership, and connection within the HMSM community.

The fund supports a wide range of initiatives, including workshops, company visits, networking activities, competitions, challenges, excursions, and events. Activities must be accessible to HMSM students and contribute to their personal and professional development.

As a manager, you know from experience that some of the most valuable lessons are learned outside the classroom. Your contribution gives students the opportunity to take initiative, challenge themselves, and grow. An investment in The Extra Mile Fund is therefore more than a donation. It is an investment in the next generation of hospitality professionals.

What does the fund offer?

Great ideas deserve the opportunity to be brought to life. The fund provides financial support for essential organisational costs, such as speakers, venues, materials, and travel expenses, helping to make activities accessible to more students.

The fund can cover up to 50% of the total budget. In addition, at least one other source of funding must be secured.

The more students who can participate and the greater the impact of the activity, the higher the likelihood of receiving support.

Amy Keulen

Fourth-year student Amy Keulen participated in the Excellence Programme in 2024 and later served as an External Coordinator for two editions

‘Joining this programme was one of the best decisions of my student life. This experience didn’t just boost my organizational skills; it also gave me confidence. Extra-curricular activities like this depend heavily on funding. Without a proper budget, we can’t host inspiring guest speakers or organize a professional final pitch event.’
