Being an international Student in Maastricht is a positively unique experience! Maastricht happens to be a melting pot of students from all over the world; welcoming people from the North, West, South, and East. I never imagined I would completely adapt to being part of this city’s life, yet here I am, hoping I never have to leave because I love Maastricht so much!
Third year student Jean Maroun shares his experience living and studying here for the last couple years.
I started off my journey living on the hotel school campus in the Student Residence. The hotel school is situated in the neighborhood of Limmel and here I made a lot of good friends & connections that will last for a life time. Currently, I reside in the city centre, close to all the noise and action. I love being a part of a moving environment, which somewhat does not rest; It gives me a sense of moving forward in growth.
Living in the city comes with its’ perks. It is full of different restaurants, from tons of different backgrounds and cultures. I often visit "Levantini" as they cook middle eastern food that really reminds me of the food my mother used to make for me at home in Lebanon! I would also suggest visiting the food stands or the fruit and veggie market that takes place twice a week on the market square for cheap groceries. In Maastricht, there is always something going on. People love to go out or enjoy a drink on the terrace with their loved ones. It is quite rare to see this city lacking energy.
Things are quite different here compared to where I’m from. I am from Lebanon and grew up in Kuwait. Back home, things don’t change often, as people tend to maintain certain routines and lifestyles. Events and unique “pop-ups” are mostly held on a seasonally occasion. People like to maintain a safe or laid-back lifestyle, as the tradition of the culture places the family above all else. They spend their Fridays mainly with the family and Saturdays with friends (as these are weekend days). Whereas, through the work days, people mainly focus on sporting or carrying out personal and work tasks. This is why I made the personal decision of moving and living in the Netherlands. For me, the constant change and growth in the city of Maastricht continues to astonish me. New events constantly take place, the city is full of vibrant and unique spots and people are always out and about: shopping, strolling, dining out and enjoying the city life. Quite hard to get bored here on the long term. Every year, the number of new students and people seeking jobs increases in the city – filling it with unique experiences that one would seek to be a part of.
No matter where you are from, I can assure you, you will enjoy this place. I have grown a lot, personally in terms of my inner self and professionally during my education at Hotel Management School Maastricht. As a student, seeking a bright future in hospitality, this place holds the perfect environment to learn about the world and all it may hold for one.
Due to the student life in Maastricht – with students from the hotel school, but also from other studies at Zuyd and the University of Maastricht - the city is full of different cultural backgrounds, and unique educational backgrounds. I couldn’t think of a better spot to pursue my study and career. I cannot wait for the future ahead of me.
