Student Life in Maastricht

"Students from all over the world come to study here. All these different backgrounds, nationalities and cultures contribute to the city; making it international, young and vibrant!"

Choosing for the Hotel Management School in Maastricht means not only studying at a great and well-respected institute, it also means living in one of the most beautiful cities of the Netherlands. While you’ll live on campus the first year, the city centre is only 15 minutes away by bike. This means you can easily hop into the city and enjoy all it has to offer!

International student city Maastricht

Historic and International

Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, with a historic city centre, cultural sights and small streets to wander through. But more importantly, Maastricht is a true student city. Students from all over the world come to study here. All these different backgrounds, nationalities and cultures contribute to the city, making it international, modern, young and vibrant!
Because the city is small, you will feel at home fast. Right in the heart of the city you find Vrijthof square. This large square is surrounded by historic buildings and is one of the most well-known places in the city. You can sit and soak up the sun at one of the cafes’ terraces, and there are often events organised such as the Christmas Market or the ‘Preuvenemint’, a big culinary festival. From the Vrijthof you can walk to the big shopping streets or visit the ‘Stadspark’ for a relaxing afternoon in the city’s park.

Student Life

Because Maastricht is a student oriented city, there are always plenty of activities to do and places to go. Whether you like to experience the culture by exploring the city or visiting a museum, relax alongside the river ‘Maas’ with friends or immerse yourself in Maastricht’s nightlife, there’s something for everyone. There are also often events organised by and for students where you can meet new people and make new friends.

So, student life is nothing without good nightlife right? No need to worry! If you like an evening out with friends, cross the river and visit one of the many bars in the city centre. If you rather love to dance the night away, visit night club Complex.
The renovated Sphinx quarter houses different establishments in old factory buildings. Here you can go see a movie in one of the two cinemas, or visit concerts in the ‘Muziekgieterij’.

Gastronomy and Hospitality

As a Hotel Management Student, you’ll find that gastronomy and hospitality are two very important things here. Good food is a key ingredient in Maastricht’s culture, and going out for food should always be a great experience! The city is filled with cafes, restaurants, wine bars and everything in between. Whether you’d like to try the local cuisine and eat a ‘frietje zoervleisj’ at an authentic cafe, experience a five course meal at a top class restaurant, or crave your favourite meal from home, chances are Maastricht’s got it all. Go take a sneak peek at the ‘Kruisherenhotel’; the five star hotel owned by alumnus Camille Oostwegel. This hotel, situated in an old monastery in the city centre is a must-see for everyone with a passion for hospitality! Check out the beautiful lobby of this design hotel or perhaps enjoy a wine in the wine bar.

Buy a ‘vlaai’ (local pastry) at the bakery, shop fresh products at the Friday market or get coffee from the local coffee bar. After a long night of partying, go for Sunday brunch in the ‘Wyck’ area or end your weekend in style at the Bold Rooftop bar; hidden at the 8th floor of the Student Hotel. Enjoy the panoramic view of the city and you’ll see why Maastricht has been the right choice all along!
