Global Mind Monitor

The Global Mind Monitor (GMM) has reached the milestone of 20.000 unique users! The self-assessment instrument is developed by the research center to help students and professionals reflect on and develop their intercultural and international competences. We are also currently busy developing the GMM 3.0! We will be including more questions focused on sustainability and we’re developing a new portal with news, information and toolkits.

International Student Journey

Integrating research into education is an important pillar of Zuyd. Students develop their research skills by conducting research in and for professional practice. Last year, for example, five students from the Hotel Management School conducted a study into the 'International Student Journey' on behalf of the Association of Dutch Hotel Management Schools and our research centre. The research resulted in generic and specific advice to the hotel schools to improve the phase from interest to onboarding for international students. The research report was presented on 5 July 2022 at BUAS Breda to representatives of the five institutes.

New Master programme and Professional Doctorate

Ankie Hoefnagels was involved in the development and accreditation of the new Master Leading Innovation in Hospitality, a  joint Master of Hotel Management School Maastricht, TU Dublin and IQS School of Management. She was also part of the national development team of the third cycle in Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality, the new Professional Doctorate (PD).

Trails of Global Mind

We organized the Trails of Global Mind, as social and international event for students who had missed out on their internship due to Covid. This one day hike event right across the Euregion included all elements of Global Competence: knowledge of international, local and intercultural business, understanding and appreciation of other perspectives, meeting people with different cultures and backgrounds, and doing something good for the world.

Presence at various international scientific platforms

This year our research center was present at various international platforms in the field of intercultural communication, internationalization, higher education, hospitality and human resource management. Joris and Isabelle presented their research into the relationship between cultural intelligence and the composition of the international classroom online during EAIR 2022. In May 2022, Tom Kuypers, Hilde Hanegreefs and Ankie Hoefnagels presented their research during the SIETAR conference in Malta.

We enjoy working with partners from our network in the field of internationalization in higher education and global citizenship. An important platform for this research is the biennial conference of the International Academy for Intercultural Research (IAIR), which was held this year in Rapperswill, Switzerland. Our lectorate organized the symposium Effective interventions for global competence development in an international classroom there, together with our partners from Maastricht University, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and NHL Stenden. In recent years, many universities have further internationalized their curricula, in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Inauguration of Ankie Hoefnagels

September 2021 Ankie was inaugurated as professor Global Minds @ Work at Hotel Management School Maastricht. She did this with her inaugural address: The astronaut and the empathy wall: It takes a school to raise a global mind. The role of higher education in fostering young professionals’ global competence.
