The 8 best budget & student friendly places for a good sandwich

Hi, my name is Fleur and I am currently in my third year of Hotel Management School Maastricht. This schoolyear I have decided to write blogs for students to get the most out of their student life in Maastricht in a fun, healthy and sporty way. I know eating out can be costly sometimes. Therefore I am writing you this blog about budget & student friendly places for a good sandwich, so that you can still treat yourself from time to time when your bank account is on it’s all time low.

1.    SoDelicious

On your way to/from the station? Then you should make a stop at ‘So Delicious’. So Delicious in Maastricht is a versatile bakery, café, and restaurant. It offers freshly made pastries, artisan bread, and a range of takeaway options like sandwiches and soups. Known for its open kitchen and transparent setup, the venue provides a cozy and vibrant atmosphere. Highlights include freshly prepared meals with a focus on quality and hospitality. It’s a great spot for breakfast, lunch or takeaway. You will be blown away by their beautiful and aesthetically pleasing shop.

2.    JOS broodjesbar

Located a little further, in the Wyckerbrugstraat, you can find JOS broodjesbar. This sandwich place opened just a few month ago, in June 2024. At JOS they try to use local products as much as possible and they especially aim for fresh, which means that they make all the tapenades, sauces and salads themselves. You can definitely taste it! They also have delicious coffees and juices. Perfect place for lunch on the go I would say.

3.    Bagels & Beans

Close to JOS, in the same street, Bagels & Beans is located. I believe we all know Bagels & Beans, as it is a big company with locations all around the Netherlands. This doesn’t mean that this place shouldn’t be part of this list. You can either take away or eat in their delicious bagels. They have a variety of bagels, cream cheeses and toppings, so there is something for everyone’s liking. All bagels are organic as well. How responsible!

4.    Tiramisu

Who doesn’t love the Italian kitchen? I can’t name a single person. Tiramisu Maastricht is a cozy Italian eatery known for its warm paninis and fresh focaccia, featuring unique and fresh Italian ingredients. The place is popular for its vegan-friendly options. It is primarily a takeaway spot and their prices are definitely reasonable for the generous portions they offer. Of course, this sandwich shop is worth a visit.

5.    La Bottega di Gemma

Another delicious Italian spot is La Bottega di Gemma. It is located near Tapijn and is known for its authentic Italian paninis made with high-quality imported meats and cheeses. It’s a favourite for those seeking simple, but flavourful Italian food. Occasionally, they offer specials like lasagna for a small price. Alongside their delicious food, the warm atmosphere is complemented by some personal touches. What are you waiting for?

6.    Bufkes

Bufkes has become a huge name in the south of the Netherlands. This sandwich place was invented in the South of Limburg in 1996. Bufkes is known for the tastiest freshly prepared artisan sandwiches. In addition to a wide range of hot and cold sandwiches, they also offer fresh salads, flatbreads, homemade soups, loaded fries, specialty coffees, fresh juices and sweets. With multiple locations in Maastricht, such as Mosae Forum, Brusselse Poort and Plein 1992, it’s a convenient choice for a quick meal. However, as this place is focused on the Burgundian lifestyle of the south I would not recommend to go here as a vegan.

7.    A La Paco

Personally, I also really like the Spanish cuisine. Fortunately, there is a wonderful Spanish delicacy shop in the city centre of Maastricht. At A La Paco Maastricht you will find a wide range of typical Spanish dishes. From various sandwiches, hot & cold, to tapas platters, meat, cheese, olives and alioli (at your own risk). Everything is freshly prepared by their Spanish owner. Despite the fact that everything is prepared in a traditional and authentic way, all dishes and snacks at A La Paco are very affordable. This makes it definitely worth visiting.

8.    Le Salonard

Last but not least, I introduce you to Le Salonard. I actually have not been here yet, but this place is high on my list as I have heard so many positive stories about it, especially about their famous toasties. This fresh sandwich with or without meat is available for a super affordable price. Le Salonard is a specialty shop and deli, renowned for its artisan bread, fine cheeses, charcuterie, and an array of gourmet products like chutneys and oils. The shop is celebrated for its high-quality goods sourced from both local and international producers, making it a go-to spot for food enthusiasts. It offers a cozy and welcoming atmosphere where visitors can enjoy unique culinary items, either as takeaways or as part of beautifully arranged gift baskets. A must-try!
