How do I survive the first year at Hotel Management School Maastricht?

Tips by students

'This is the time to explore your interests and passions, so don't be afraid to pursue activities or courses that you enjoy.'

Starting a new study and leaving your hometown can be scary for some people. During your first year of studying at Hotel Management School Maastricht, you will live in the student residence with fellow students. Everyone experiences their first year differently. What better way to get tips for your first year than from other students? Therefore we asked some of our students what advice they would’ve liked to know when they started their studies.

1. Interact with other students

In your first year at the Hotel Management School Maastricht, both academic growth and social expansion are important aspects. Building connections with other students is a good way to enhance your student life. The connections you make in the first year form a network for sharing experiences, studying, and navigating both successes and challenges. Staying open-minded in your interactions can lead to meaningful relationships and unexpected friendships. This network is not just for socializing—it's a valuable asset for personal and academic success.

2. Take care of your health

Make sure to take care of your physical and mental health in your first year by getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and staying active. In order to get this, make sure to take all the essentials with you for your first year.

For example, some students mentioned that they wouldn’t have been able to survive their first year without their sandwich toaster and mini-fridge. We don’t know if living off grilled cheese sandwiches are necessarily good for your health, but it will be a nice snack after a full day’s program.

Self-Care Tips

1.    Stay Hydrated: Carry a reusable water bottle and fill it up at the different filling stations throughout the school. Staying hydrated is key to maintaining energy and focus.
2.    Organizational Tools: Keep a planner or use a digital calendar. Staying organized can reduce anxiety and help you manage your time effectively.
3.    Healthy Snacking Options: Stock up on healthy snacks. Nuts, fruits, and yogurt are great for keeping your energy up between meals.
4.    Create a Personal Space: Personalize your living space with items that make you feel at home – photos, plants, or small decorations can make a big difference.

Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t just about physical health; it’s also about maintaining your mental and emotional well-being. By taking care of your health you are all set to take on the first year at the Hotelschool Maastricht!

3. Do whatever makes YOU happy

This is the time to explore your interests and passions, so don't be afraid to pursue activities or courses that you enjoy. Especially at the beginning of the academic year, it might be hard to set boundaries. However, if you want to keep your balance, it is important to stick to your own values and don't change yourself for someone else. The tip we got from our students was: don't change yourself, do whatever makes YOU happy!

4. Join associations, organizations or clubs

Joining an association or student organization is a great way to meet new people with shared interests. It can also help you develop your network that will be useful in your future career. At Hotel Management School Maastricht you can become a member of Student Association Amphitryon, the oldest and largest association in Maastricht. Within Amphitryon there are different ways to be involved and there is a good chance there is a committee that will match your interests!

In Maastricht itself you can also look for clubs or groups that align with your academic or personal interests.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Whether it's from a lecturer, tutor, or peer, seeking assistance can help you understand course material better and feel more confident in your abilities. The lecturers at Hotel Management School Maastricht want to see you succeed as well, so don’t be afraid to ask if you need help. Importantly, make sure to ask for help well in advance. Avoid waiting until exams are just around the corner.

There are lots of places to explore in Maastricht, attend events, explore the Hotelschool campus and surrounding area and try new things. Your first year can be a time of growth and self-discovery, so make the most of it! But on a final note: make sure to keep your balance between partying, studying, relaxing etc.
