Why study in Maastricht?

Life as a student is something that you will never forget. Especially when you choose to study Hotel Management in Maastricht. We asked our students what they like the most about living and studying in Maastricht. Here’s seven reasons why student life in Maastricht is unique! 

1. Hospitality & Maastricht go hand in hand

Maastricht is often called the most Burgundian city in the Netherlands. The city is known for its love of good food, wine, and historical centre. Students in Maastricht have a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from. Making Maastricht an excellent place to socialize and meet new people. What is a better way to learn about the hospitality industry than living in the city that is known for it?

2. Lots of job opportunities

In Maastricht there are a lot of job opportunities for students who want to earn some extra money next to their studies. Whether it's working in a café, restaurant, supermarket or a shop, you will have plenty of workplaces to choose from! For international students it is also relatively easy to find a job: depending on the sector it is not always obligatory to be able to speak (fluent) Dutch as English is accepted as well.

3. Open atmosphere 

As mentioned before, one of the things Maastricht is known for are its hospitality and variety of restaurants and bars.  Since Maastricht is a melting pot of different cultures it is the perfect place to learn from other cultures and their cuisine. You can find all sorts of food here, from local dishes to food from all over the world! The people from Maastricht are known as welcoming and hospitable, making it an excellent place for students to live, study and socialize!

4. International student city

Maastricht is a truly international city. The city attracts students from all over the world which makes it unique, vibrant and multicultural. As an international student it makes it easier to find your way around because you won’t be the only one coming from abroad! There are lots of activities during the weeks organized for students. Our student association S.V. Amphitryon organises many activities, but there are also lots of events and activities in the city which are open for all students in Maastricht. 

5. Village-like feel

Despite being a big city, Maastricht has a village-like feel. The city center is compact and easy to navigate, which makes it an excellent place to explore. Make sure you buy or rent a bike as it allows you to easily travel anywhere in the city, it’s much faster than walking or taking the bus. You’ll find your way fast in the city and find it has many facilities and opportunities. The campus of HMSM is about a fifteen minute bike ride away from the city center!

6. Beautiful city center

Maastricht has a beautiful city center full of history and culture. The city center is home to stunning architecture, including the famous St. Servatius Bridge and the Basilica of Our Lady. You will surely discover hidden gems every time you’re in the city. Exploring its winding streets provides not only a glimpse into the city's past but also the chance to make personal connections with the place you call home during your academic journey.

7. Student-oriented

Maastricht is a city made for students! Scattered across the city you'll find all sorts of services and facilities especially for students. This makes it pleasant to spend time in this city. During the year there are also a lot of events that you can enjoy, like the Christmas market, summer festivals, Foodtruck Festival TREK, carnival and more!
